The Killing of Sister George, directed by Robert Aldrich and released in 1968 was groundbreaking in its equivocal treatment of homosexuality in mainstream cinema. While much of mainstream cinema, both before and after the mid-20th century stigmatized unconventional sexual preference or styling as "unholy" or deviant, this particular film presented female homosexuality as well within the mainstream of society. Sister George, played by Beryl Reid was an actress on a popular daytime soap opera who was fired after a drop in ratings. George's downward spiral after this setback included losing her female lover Childie, played by Susannah York, to George's female BBC programming director who was also a lesbian.
